SEMI CHEMICAL WOOD PULP
Kraft pulp is a high-strength type of pulp that is used to make a variety of known and significant items in our daily lives.
- Commercial tissue papers, household tissue, towel and hygiene grades, and other consumer products
- Food and beverage contact applications, industrial papers, Japanese Washi sheets, fibre cement, and plastic-fibre composites are among the specialist paper and non-paper goods available.
- Sheets for printing and writing that are free of wood, as well as office papers, photocopying and converting papers
The Kraft Pulp Process
Wood fiber, water, chemicals, and heat are all necessary ingredients in the production of kraft pulp. Wood fibers are mixed with a solution of caustic soda and sodium sulphide and cooked in a digester to generate kraft pulp. This removes the fibres from the lignin, which acts as a natural adhesive to hold them together. Much of the water, chemicals, and steam used in the manufacturing process are recovered and reused at the production facilities.
- Raw wood chips (both soft and hard wood) are pre-steamed in a steaming vessel to make Kraft pulp (a form of chemical pulp). The lignin glue that keeps the wood fibres together is dissolved by cooking steamed chips in a pressured digester with a combination of chemicals and heat.
- The pressure in the digester is released into a blow tank, where the chips are separated into unbleached pulp fibre.
- In the brown stock washing stage, residual chemicals are removed and recycled.
- The pulp is subsequently bleached in a bleach plant to achieve its well-known dazzling white color.
- The bleached pulp is then diluted to a slurry and sprayed across a pulp machine screen to form the pulp mat and begin the drying and dewatering process in the dryer section.
- On the baling line, the dry pulp is cut and baled into 400 kg bales in preparation for transport around the world.
Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp
Chemical pulp is made by combining woodchips and chemicals in a digester. The lignin in the fibre is broken down by the chemical action in the digester. The glue that keeps fibres together is lignin.
The completed bleached softwood kraft pulp is made up of long, slender fibres with high bonding and tensile qualities. NBSK pulp is used to make a wide range of paper goods, such as printing and writing paper, specialty grades, and a variety of tissue products.
Bleached Chemical Thermo-Mechanical Pulp (BCTMP)
In a non-chlorine environment, the mechanical process uses heat, chemicals, and a refining process to produce BCTMP. Softwood BCTMP is used to make coated board grades, printing and writing paper, and paper towel/napkin grades, among other things.
