The leaves of these massive palms can grow up to 30 m (98 ft) high. The trunks of these palms are robust with distinct leaf scars. In some species, the trunk develops a distinct swelling just below the crown, though for unknown reasons.

The leaves are fan-shaped and 2-3 meters long. They have spines along the margins of the petiole. The leaf sheath has a distinct cleft at its base. The inflorescences appear through this cleft. Old leaf sheaths are retained on the trunk but fall away over time.

Borassus palms are dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. Male flowers are less than 1 cm long and in semi-circular clusters. Female flowers are 3–5 cm wide, globe-shaped and solitary, sitting directly on the surface of the inflorescence axis.

Each of the nearly spherical, 15–25 cm wide fruits has one to three big seeds. Fruit colours can range from black to brown, yellow, or orange depending on the species; the fibrous pulp has a pleasant scent. Each seed is protected by a woody endocarp since the fruit is eaten by frugivores like elephants, monkeys, and other grazers. In order to protect itself from frequent fires in its savanna habitat, the young seedling extends downward into the soil at germination. After an arbitrary number of years (the establishment phase), the seedling forms a stem and quickly rises above the savanna vegetation, where it is then less vulnerable to fire.

Uses of Borassus Flabellifer/Asian Palmyra Palm Seeds

Palmyra palms are widely farmed and commercially advantageous, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. With approximately 800 applications, the palmyra palm is one of the most significant plants in India and Cambodia. The leaves are also used as writing material, for mats, baskets, fans, caps, and umbrellas.

It is more prevalent in the southern region of India, where it is used for a variety of purposes, including the production of jaggery from the syrup.

The parallel veins of palmyra leaves, which served as a suitable guideline, were utilised as writing paper in ancient India. Indians would select mature leaves that were the right size, shape, and texture, and they would boil them in salt water with turmeric powder to preserve them. When the leaf surfaces had sufficiently dried, a hole was cut in one corner and the surfaces were polished with pumice. A stylus is used to write on the four pages of each leaf in a linked, cursive form. The finished leaves are then sheared and knotted.

Black wood is highly prized for use in building, particularly for wharves, fences, and other structures that are near water.

The tree produces a wide variety of food. The young plants are either roasted and ground into meal or eaten as a vegetable. The young, jelly-like seeds are consumed together with the roasted or raw fruits. Young male and female inflorescences can provide a sugary syrup called toddy, which is then condensed to yield jaggery/palm sugar or fermented to generate the alcoholic beverage arrack. It is commonly used in Javanese cuisine and is known as Gula Jawa (Javanese sugar) in Indonesia. The roots may be dried to make the chewy snack known as odiyal. Additionally, different components of the plant have been said to have medical benefits. The tree sap is often used as a laxative.

The palmyra tree (பனை மரம்) is the state tree of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu residents hold it in high regard and use it frequently. The tree’s leaf is used to make fans. It is also used on roofs. The leaves are affixed to the roof of a home. It is also used to make baskets, carpets, caps, and other items. Many people consume the fruit. The fruit is known as nungu. This fruit is often utilised in the production of desserts. The wood is used to make beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, and other items. The bark of this shrub was once used to produce pencils for writing on banana leaves.
