Derivation
- By the action of water on calcium carbide, purified of impurities like ammonia, phosphine, hydrogen sulphide, and arsenated hydrogen, dried and finally dissolved in acetone stored in cylinders.
Safety
- Very flammable (in pure from), dangerous fire risk, burns with intense hot flame; explosive limits in air 2.5-80%. Forms explosive compounds with silver, mercury and copper, which should be excluded from contact with acetylene in transmission systems. Copper alloys maybe used with caution. Piping should be electrically bonded and grounded.
Uses
- The gas is used in a variety of industries for a variety of purposes. One of the most common uses is for welding. When dissolved in acetone, acetylene can be used for welding metals such as steel, aluminium, and brass.
- Another common use for the gas is in the manufacturing of plastics. Acetylene can be used to create a variety of plastics, including PVC and polyethylene.
- Dissolved acetylene gas is also used in the chemical industry. Acetylene can be used to create a variety of chemicals, including acetic acid and vinyl chloride.
- Finally, dissolved acetylene gas is also used in the food industry. Acetylene can be used to create a variety of food products, including cheese and eggs.
