Swamimalai Bronze Icons refers to bronze idols and statues manufactured in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu. It has been recognized as a Geographical indication by the Government of India in 2008–09. Here we showcase the manufacturers of Renowned Handcrafted South Indian bronze statues/idols & panchaloha statues (traditional statues made of five-metal alloy of copper (82%), brass(15%), lead(3%) and a minuscule amount of silver & gold as the constituents.
These artisans (around 40 families) patronized by the Chola Kings have been practicing the art for atleast 15 generations. They settled down in Tanjore during 10th Century AD working on the Brihadeeswara Temple and Dharasuram temples built by Raja Raja Chola, the great Chola emperor.
The artisans have got the unique GI tag from the geographical indications registry of the Government of India.
Statue figures include Nataraja, Ganesha(Vinayagar), Hayagriva, Muruga, Garudalwar, Krishna, Valampuri Vinayagar, Edampuri Vinayagar, Natchiyarkoil Karudan, Perumal, Siva, Rajarajeswari, Lakshmi, Boothathalwar, Nagathalwar, Narthana Vinayagar, Shivalingam, Annapoorani, Manikavasagar, Narthana Krishnan, Meenakshi Ammal, Rajarajeswari, Shri Chakra, Sekkizhar, Mariamman, Ambal, Sivagami, Kothandaraman, Rama, Lakhsmana, Seetha, Hanuman, Pradosha Moorthy, Arthanareeswarar, Narasimhar, Dhakshinamoorthy, temple bells, kalasam, kodi maram, temple doors, kavasam, thiruvachi etc
Sizes range from 6 inches to 7 feet. Statues are also made of pure silver.
