Another jewel in the manufacturing industry cap of Tamilnadu! The hand-woven carpets known as Bhavani Jamakkalam in local parlance are made out of coarse colored threads of cotton and are known for their aesthetic value.
These traditional carpets manufactured in & around the town of Bhavani in Erode district have been bestowed with a Geographical indication (GI) tag from the Government of India in 2005-06. In Bhavani, jamakkalams are traditionally weaved by individual weavers with pit looms in their houses.
These floor mats & hall carpets are long lasting and can last for more than 10 to 15 years depending on the quality of cotton used.
The carpets come in a wide range of sizes to choose from. The starting size is 1.5 ft wide x 2 ft long and can go upto 15 ft wide x 30 ft long.
The common carpet sizes are 1.5×2 / 3×6 / 3.5×5 / 4×7 / 5×7.5 / 8×10 / 1.5×10 / 1.5×20 / 1.5×30 / 15×30
All dimensions are in feet. Custom manufacturing can also be done. The costing is done on the square-feet basis.
Two types of jamakkalams are produced in Bhavani. The first type is made from coarser cotton threads capable of producing carpets with colored bands. As the thread was coarser, designs could not be weaved on to this type of carpet. Hence, a second softer variety of jamakkalams were introduced that were made of artificial silk threads enabling weavers to weave different kinds of border designs. Jamakkalams are also used to make fashion products such as backpacks.
The jamakkalams are exported to various countries like Sweden, Germany, Italy, the UK, the US and Singapore.
