Metal bellows are elastic vessels that can be compressed when pressure is applied to the outside of the vessel, or extended under vacuum. When the pressure or vacuum is released, the bellows will return to its original shape (provided the material has not been stressed past its yield strength).
There are two main types of metal bellows — formed and welded.
Formed Bellows
Formed bellows are produced by a variety of processes, including cold forming (rolling), electroforming and hydroforming.
Hydroformed bellows are produced by forcing a metal tube to expand under hydraulic pressure inside a bellows-shaped mould to assume the convoluted shape of the mould whereas rolled formed bellows are mechanically formed using rollers.
Materials used
Austenitic SS to grade 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 321, 347 Inconel, Incoloy, C276, etc.
Titanium, Titanium Alloys
Non-ferrous like Copper, Brass, Phosphor bronze, etc.
Applications
Pipelines, Turbines, Boilers, Process Industries, etc.
Welded Bellows
Welded bellows (also called edge-welded or diaphragm bellows) are highly flexible. These are manufactured by welding a number of individually formed diaphragms to each other both in the ID and OD.
The welding of metal bellows is a microscopic welding process, typically performed under laboratory conditions at high magnification.
Materials used
Welded bellows can be fabricated from a variety of exotic metals and alloys like AM 350, 15-5, 17-4 Carpenter Steel, etc.
Advantages
Advantages of welded bellows include compactness (higher performance in a smaller package), ability to be compressed to solid height with no damage, resistance to nicks and dents, and dramatically greater flexibility.
Applications
Accumulators, Bellows Seals, Bellows Couplings, Sensors, Reservoirs.
Metal Bellows Accumulators are basically hydraulic accumulators with a metal bellows arrangement to separate the compressible gas from the operating fluid. Welded metal bellows accumulators provide an exceptionally high level of accumulator performance, and can be produced with a broad spectrum of alloys, resulting in a broad range of fluid compatibility. Another advantage to this type is that it does not face issues with high pressure operation, thus allowing more energy storage capacity.
Advantages
Completely maintenance free
Higher reliability than bladder or piston types
Long, predictable life under operating conditions
Absolutely leak tight – hermetically sealed
Compatible with normal, exotic or corrosive fluids
Infinite storage life – corrosion free, no loss of gas charge
Zero friction – repeatable performance with no wearing parts Minimises weight and cost by eliminating charging lines and valves
Extreme temperature capabilities
Suitable for all hydraulic system applications.
Materials used
347 Stainless Steel
AM 350 Stainless Steel
Inconel 625
Titanium
Carpenter Steel 17 – 4 & 15 – 5
Applications
Hydraulic systems
Braking systems
Aerospace applications
Orbiter Hydraulics
Water tanks
Ammonia tanks.
Valve Bellows are better known as “Zero Leak Valves” or “Emission Free Valves”. Here a bellows is used between the housing and the central rising stem to seal the inside completed from the outside world to prevent leakage. This is done by welding the bellows to the bonnet on the top and the stem base at the bottom. As the valve system moves up and down, the bellows accordingly expands or contracts, matching the stroke movement. Since there are no sliding or rotating valves, the fluid remains completely sealed, thus saving on energy and maintenance costs.
Advantages
Safe, energy saving
Maintenance-free
Absolute leak-tightness
Unraised handle with indicator
Applications
Power Industries
Process Industries
Thermal
Cold and hot water
Steam, Gas, Oil, etc
