Epoxy Adhesives
Definition
Epoxy adhesive are regarded as the strongest adhesive available and have wide industrial use as structural (load bearing) adhesives. These are thermosetting adhesives, which solidify through chemical reactions. These chemical reactions take place either at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. These chemically reacted and solidified epoxy materials will only soften but do not melt on heating.
Applications
Bonding, gap filing, Potting and encapsulation.
Curing Mechanism
At the time of applying the epoxy adhesive on to the metal/plastic substrates, it is in the liquid state. This liquid adhesive thoroughly wets the substrate and thereby makes initiate contact with the substrates. During chemical reaction the liquid material gets converted into a solid material with negligible shrinkage. Once the liquid material is solidified, the cohesive strength increases. This results in forming strong bonding with the substrates.
Product types
- One component epoxy adhesive system: It contains an epoxy resin & a latent curing agent. Latent curing agents are inactive at room temperature and active at high temperature. When one component epoxy adhesive system is heated to high temperature, the chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener starts and the material gets cured in to a tough mass exhibiting high bonding strength.
- Two component epoxy adhesive system: These are room temperature curing systems. Epoxy resin and the hardener are packed separately and supplied as a package to the customer. These two are mixed in particular ratios (Weight or volume basis) during use. The mixed adhesive system is used within the potlife period to achieve optimum bonding strength. The complete curing of two part epoxy adhesive systems require a minimum of 5 – 7 days.

Silicones
Definition
Silicones are synthetic polymer containing alternate silicone and oxygen atoms as its backbone. Silicones are made from silicon (a metal obtained from silica sand) and methyl chloride (an organic compound) in a process known as the “direct process”. The Silicone sealant in the uncured state normally looks like a thick paste or cream. After curing the paste turns into an impressive rubber.
Applications
Silicone sealant are used as a form-in-place gaskets for engine & transmission applications, sealing of exterior joints, aquarium joints bonding, sealing of bath tubs, construction and glazing application, electrical potting & encapsulation, mould making, etc.
Curing Mechanism
RTV silicone systems use humidity or moisture in the air during curing and cannot be accelerated using heat (excessive heat in the curing process can be detrimental). Small amounts of by-product are also produced. The cure process will only take place if the material is open to the atmosphere and curing will be adversely affected if access to humidity is removed prior to the completion of the cure process.
Provided product types
- One component RTV silicone sealant
